Governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje has once again been stopped from proceeding with the creation of additional emirates by a high court in Kano State.
The high
court also prohibited Ganduje from making the chairmanship of the Kano emirates
council a two-year tenure.
Recalled that Ganduje was taken to court by some kingmakers in Kano State.
The ruling
was given on Tuesday, December 10, 2019, according to a report issued by
Nigerian Tribune. This is the second attempt by Governor Ganduje in creating
four more emirates from the original traditional structure.
Justice
Ahmed Badamosi, the presiding judge ruled that the plan to create additional
emirates council must be put on hold.
In a related
judgment, the court also stopped the appointments of heads of the new emirates
council. Ganduje had earlier announced a two-year tenure rotation after the
appointment of the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi. And in a bid to stop the
Governor’s move, some kingmakers headed to the court.
Among the
kingmakers who went to court include; Muktar Adnan (Sarkin Ban Kano), Bello
Abubakar (Sarkin Dawaki Mai Tuta), Abdullahi Sarki Ibrahim ( Makama Kano), and
Yusuf Nabahani (Madakin Kano).
The report
named the Governor, the Kano State House of Assembly speaker and others as
defendants.
However, the
court succeeded in halting Ganduje from cutting the powers of the kingmakers as
entrenched in the law of the Kano State emirates council
The case was
adjourned to December 17, 2019, for further hearing.
