Omar Al-Basir has been sentenced to 2-years in a correctional Centre for corruption by a court in Khartoum.
This is one
of the many cases brought against the ousted autocrat who was ousted in April.
The former president was ordered by the court to serve a 2-years jail term in a correctional facility for the elderly. Omar Al-Bashir was convicted of graft and possession of foreign currency, said Judge Al Sadiq Abdelrahman
“Under the
law, those who are 70-years and above shall not serve jail terms”, said the
Judge. He will begin his term after the verdict has been given in a similar
case where he is accused of killing demonstrators during the protest that
brought about his ouster, the Judge confirms.
The Judge also ruled that Omar Al-Bashir’s 5.7 million Sudanese pounds ($128,000), 6.9 million Euros, and $351,770 found in his home be confiscated. One of the former president’s lawyer hinted that Bashir will appeal the judgment.
Several of
his supporters were heard outside the courtroom chanting “There is no god
but God”
The ousted leader appeared several times in a
metal cage wearing the traditional Sudanese white jalabiya and turban.
