The US has secretly sent two Chinese embassy officials packing. The New York Times reported on Sunday that these officials had driven to a sensitive military base in Virginia sometimes in September 2019.
The newspaper, which cited people with the knowledge of the saga, said it appeared to be the first in over 30-years that the US has sent packing Chinese diplomats on suspicion of espionage.
The Times
also confirmed that one of the diplomats was believed to be an intelligence
officer working undercover.
The Times
said the diplomats were accompanied by their wives when they drove to the
checkpoint at the entry point of the sensitive installation near Norfolk, Virginia.
The guards
on duty observed that they did not have permission to come in and directed them
to exit.
These
Chinese officials continued into the base, evading military checks until they
were forcefully stopped by blocking them with fire trucks.
