Lukmon Akanbi, a police sergeant has been dismissed from the Nigerian Police Force for shooting to death Babatunde Adeniji, a civilian around the Eko Atlantic area in Victoria Island, Lagos.
Report available to PUNCH Metro revealed that the late Adeniji was on his way from an event around 4;20 am Friday 27 December 2019, when the police officer accosted him.
A fracas
ensued between them and Akanbi shot him. Eyewitnesses rushed the 39-year-old
victim to the Naval Dockyard Hospital where he was confirmed dead.
Bala Elkanah, Police PRO while reacting to the development said on Friday that the Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Hakeem Odumosu had therefore ordered the arrest of Akanbi for orderly room trial.
The PPRO
said the commissioner of police has ordered the arrest of Sergeant Akanbi
Lukmon, F/No 448407, serving with the Victoria Island Police Station over the
killing of one Ramon Adeniyiy, 39, around 4;20 am around Eko Atlantic, VI,
Lagos.
So, there was a disagreement between the officer and the late Akanbi who was returning from an event. The sergeant was said to have pulled the trigger of his pistol on the unarmed civilian, which is far from the professional standards on the handling of the firearms.
The PPRO said;
“He was arraigned before the adjudicating officer on three counts of discreditable conduct contrary to paragraph E (3) first schedule, unlawful and unnecessary exercise of authority contrary to paragraph Q (2), and damage to articles contrary to paragraph D (1), police act and regulations, cap 370 LFN 1990.
Therefore, the sergeant was found guilty of all charges and awarded the punishment of dismissal from the police force. He’s been handed over to the state CID, Yaba for necessary prosecution in the conventional court.
