The couple,
John Henderson, 106 and Charlotte Curtis, aged 105 are officially regarded by
the Guinness Book of World Records as the oldest couple and will on Sunday 22
December 2019 be celebrating their 80th wedding anniversary. The couple will
also be celebrating 85-years after sitting in a zoology class sometimes in
1934.
John and
Charlotte got married in a very quiet ceremony with two guests in attendance on
22 December 1939 and stayed in a hotel that cost $7 per night during their
honeymoon in San Antonio.
They have been married for 80-years, though they’ve known each for 85-years which implies that the world record for the longest marriage according to the Guinness Book of World Records belongs to Herbert and Zelmyra Fisher, who got married at ages 19 and 17 respectively and were married for 86-years and 290-days before the passing on of Herbert in 2011.
While
speaking to the Washington Post on Sunday, Henderson said;
“It took
Charlotte five years to make up her mind that she wanted to get married.”
Also, while
speaking about the time he got a radio, John said,
“And I well
remember that long antenna. The antenna had to be put up from the front yard to
the backyard to receive a radio show.” John said
While at the
University of Texas in the 1930s, he recalled renting a room across the street
from the Gregory Gym, which is among the historical buildings on campus.
“The
neighbors had chickens and a cow. Imagine a cow and a chicken house across the
street from Gregory, where the campus so massive now that you rarely can
identify anything, John recalled
Charlotte
while speaking to the Washington Post said, “I thought he was just a fine
fella, and I don’t mind him looking over my shoulder, recalling the first time
she set her eyes on John in a Zoology class and he made passes at her.
Many have applauded them for their milestone-filled life together!!!!
