The latest
corruption index released by the Transparency International has ranked Nigeria
at 146 spots out of the 180 countries considered.
The report
released on Thursday revealed that Nigeria dropped two places from its last
position to be 146th most corrupt nation out of 180.
According to
the reports, Transparency International ranks 180 countries and territories by
their perceived levels of public sector corruption, according to business people
and experts.
"It uses a scale of zero to 100, where
zero is highly corrupt and 100 is very clean. More than two-thirds of countries
score below 50 on this year’s CPI, with an average score of just 43."
Nigeria gathered a total score of 27 from 100 points in this
year’s Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI), which is below the global average of
43
Transparency International said that this year’s Corruption
Perception Index shows that several countries did not show improvement in
tackling corruption.
It states further;
"Our
analysis also shows corruption is more pervasive in countries where big money
can flow freely into electoral campaigns and where governments listen only to
the voices of wealthy or well-connected individuals."
Sub-Saharan
African countries have the lowest average CPI of 32 out of 100 points. European
Union and Western Europe scored the highest with 66 points
