At least six
people have been reported to have died with many injured on Tuesday 17 December
2109 when a mining pit collapsed at the Zawan Community area of Jos South Local
Government Area of Plateau State.
It was
reported that about 50 persons were inside the mining pit as at the time it
collapsed.
A member
representing Jos South Constituency in the Plateau State House of Assembly, Mr.
Gwottson Fom confirmed this sad incident in a press release on Wednesday 18
December 2019.
The Hon.
Member said the victims were carrying out an illegal mining activity when the
incident occurred. They are aged between (20 – 27) years.
“We know
that these young persons lost their lives engaging in an illegal activity but
it is crystal clear that unemployment led them into it.
People go
out of their way doing things considered illegal just for them and their
families to survive.
“It is not
the time to apportion blame but it is unfortunate and sad that a community will
lose six vibrant youth in one day.
Fom gave a
strong warning to illegal miners to stop the act, or if they must do it, they
should be licensed.
