Nigeria’s
President, Muhammadu Buhari is billed to sign the 2020 Appropriation Bill on
Tuesday.
The Punch
newspaper reported that a reliable source from the National Assembly had
revealed on Sunday that the presidency had extended an invitation to the
leadership of the National Assembly to the budget –signing ceremony at the
Aso-Rock Villa.
An official,
who is an aide of one of the presiding officers, who spoke on condition of
anonymity said that the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi
Gbajabiamila and the President of the Senate, Ahmed Lawan among others, had
been invited to the signing ceremony.
The source
at the National Assembly also revealed that “We have a notice from the
presidency to be at the Villa on Tuesday for the budget signing. The time and
date may change but I have it on good authority that the ceremony is slated for
Tuesday 17, 2019.
Recall that
both Chambers had on 5 December 2019 concurrently passed the 2019 Appropriation
Bill raising the budget estimate fromN10.33 Trillion to about N10.6 Trillion.
So, This will bring Nigeria back to January – December budget cycle after the National Assembly had put a clause in the bill that the budget should run from 1 January 2020
However, part of the increment was because the National Assembly raised its budget from N125 billion to N128 billion. The budget was sent to the presidency on Friday.
