The regulatory body (NAFDAC) has confiscated cartons of fake ”Fidossi Spunmante” drinks, an alcoholic wine, without proper registration numbers in Edo.
PostNaija gathered that the Assistant Director of NAFDAC in the state, Itua Esther revealed this in an interview on Saturday in Benin.
Itua stated
that the seizure followed a raid on five shops at the Upper Sakponba, Mission
Road, Benin City on Friday.
“Our target is Festa Spunmante, the registered brand of this specific drink is Fidossi Spumante.
“Festa
Spunmante is not registered with NAFDAC and as such has no registration number
on it.
“NAFDAC
is the agency that controls, regulates the exportation and importation of
regulated products. This specific brand falls under food which includes what
NAFDAC regulates.
“Meanwhile
the company that produces this particular drink is supposed to have come
through NAFDAC for proper inspection of the facility.”
“Selling
of fake drinks as well as other regulated products is not on the rise because
the agency is not resting on its continuous fight against fake products.
“The consumption of fake drinks could result in kidney problems,” she stated.
It also
confirmed that the original price of the drink goes for N8, 000, while the fake
is sold for about N5, 500 per carton.
Itua clarified that the firm was supposed to pay a specified fee for the imported food item and the brand of the drink would then be taken to the laboratory for a test.
She
said the drink was typically tested for the agency to determine what the
content was about and if it was considered fit to be consumed by Nigerians.
The assistant director thus counseled consumers to be watchful and ensure that they only purchase products with NAFDAC registration numbers.
She, however, called on consumers to also report suspected dealers with fake products to the nearest NAFDAC office.
