Armed gunmen on Friday ambushed and attacked a cargo truck with passengers, killing 16 people on Tuesday in Macomia district of Mozambique’s Northern Province of Cabo Delgado.
Eyewitnesses revealed to the press that the attack occurred in the
afternoon hours of the day when armed men came up from the woods and started shooting
sporadically at the vehicle.
PostNaija gathered that the attackers burnt down the vehicle in which eight people lost their lives almost immediately, including three soldiers.
Meanwhile, another set including seven passengers, who were rescued by the nearby community after sustaining various degrees of bullet injuries from gunshot wounds also died eventually.
In
May, some deadly attacks by armed men were also reported in the area of Cabo
Delgado, with over 30 people reportedly killed.
The Chief Commander of the Police of Mozambique, who is Bernardino Rafael, However said the attacks were financed by illegal miners (locally known as garimpeiros).
“They are garimpeiros that we wrestled
in the past for their illegal activities. They attack us back as retaliation,’’
He said.
