Several
Adamawa youths blocked the Federal highway passing through the Girei community
to Yola and other parts of the State on Tuesday 7th January 2020 to
protest against the frequent kidnappings in the area.
The youths from the Girei Local Government rendered several motorists and travelers stranded. They promised not to open the road until the authorities, particularly the commissioner of police or the Governor, address them and commit to addressing the challenge.
A spokesperson for the youths, Saidu Hamman-Girei and also youth leader, (Sarkin Matasa) of Girei District said that about 10 persons from the community recently lost their lives to kidnappers.
"But
what we are hearing now is that there is an order from the police headquarters
that the suspects be released," he said.
The youth leader also said that between N60 million – N70 million had also been paid as ransom to kidnappers.
“We
mobilized and supported the security in arresting about 11 suspects with pieces
of incriminating evidence. We want the Commissioner of Police to come and tell
us why, because serious tension is brewing here. I had to intervene yesterday
to stop youths from burning down Girei Police Station,’’ Mr. Hamman-Girei
hinted
The
Police PRO, DSP Suleiman Yahaya, said the commissioner of police had sent an
Assistant Commissioner of Police in charge of operations to Girei to handle the
situation
