A woman has
been arrested in Lagos for allegedly abusing her stepchildren. Funmilayo Samson
was arrested on Friday 27 December 2019, by the officials of the Directorate
for Citizens’ Rights after a post about her ill-treatment to her stepchildren
went viral on Facebook.
Ms.
Funmilayo was handed over to the police and the children were rescued.
The alleged
abuse was shared to Facebook by a concerned neighbor who claims Ms. Funmilayo
locks these children outside the house when she is leaving for work in the
morning and leaves them without food. The children aged 3, 9, and 12 only get
the chance to inside when she returns in the evening.
It was also
alleged that these children are exposed to physical abuse and leaves them with
bruises on their bodies.
The father of the children and the woman got married after the mother of the children died.
However, the
father of the children is not always around but only returns on weekends which
leaves the children prone to abuse from their stepmother.
Ms.
Funmilayo neighbors, along the Ebuwawa Road in the Ikorodu area of Lagos, said
that the abuse has been on for a long time and their stepmother gets
confrontational anytime anyone intervenes.
It was
further alleged that Ms. Funmilayo sometimes leaves the children without food
when she travels out of Lagos for days.
Bala Elkana,
Lagos State PPRO, confirmed the arrest of Ms. Funmilayo and rescued the
children. He reiterated that the stepmother will be charged to court.
